Sleeping in a car seat – yay or nay?

Road trips are in full force in Canada as summer is in full swing. But a question I hear often is, “Can my baby sleep safely in their car seat?”

I am here to tell you, yes…and no. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), almost all baby products are actually not intended to be used for sleep – even those that claim to be.

However, if your little one dozes off in the car, don’t worry - it is perfectly safe to let your baby sleep in a car seat while it is properly installed in the car. The bumpy movements can keep babies stimulated enough to promote breathing. Using a car seat for sleep can become a danger because it can restrict breathing when not used for its intent, which is solely for short periods of travel, not overnight sleep or daily naps. If you are travelling a longer distance, prepare to add some time onto your estimated time of arrival – you will need to make frequent stops and ensure your baby gets a break from their seat every few hours, sleeping or not.

If your baby is sleeping upon your arrival or during any stops, the AAP recommends that you move your child to a flat and firm sleeping surface once available and convenient. These sleeping surfaces, the only recommended safe places for sleep, are using cribs, bassinets or pack n’ plays. Each of these products must also confirm to the current safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The point here is, you don’t need to cancel your road trip this summer because you are concerned about when your baby will nap and being nervous to allow them to sleep in the car. Take your time, make frequent stops and ultimately, find what works best for your family.
